Do You Give a 5-Star Book Review?

If you’ve ever finished a book and thought:
“I liked it, but it wasn’t perfect. Can I still give it 5 stars?”
You’re not alone.

Many readers think a 5-star rating means a book has to be flawless. But for indie authors, that fifth star doesn’t mean “perfect.” It means you connected with the story.

What Does a 5-Star Book Rating Actually Mean?

Here’s what five stars really say:

  • You enjoyed the story

  • It kept your attention

  • You’d recommend it to a friend

That’s it.

A 5-star review doesn’t mean the book had zero typos, perfect pacing, or your favorite ending of all time. It just means it resonated.

Even if there were a few rough spots, if you loved the journey, the message, or the characters.
That’s a 5-star experience.

Reader Tip: If You’re Unsure How Many Stars to Give, This Might Help:

Visual guide explaining how to rate a book from 3 to 5 stars. Five stars means 'I loved it and would recommend it,' four stars means 'Really liked it with a few small issues,' and three stars means 'It was okay.' Includes a note that if a book wasn’t for you, you can skip the review. Bottom reminder says: 'A 5-star rating doesn’t mean perfect. It just means it resonated with you.'

Why Star Ratings Matter for Indie Authors

For indie authors, reviews do more than offer feedback. They affect discoverability.

Ratings help a book appear in searches, on "also bought" lists, and in recommendation algorithms. They tell platforms like Amazon or Goodreads:

“This book is worth showing to others.”

But here’s the catch:
Low-star reviews can hurt a book’s visibility, even when they're fair.

That’s why, if a book simply wasn’t for you, if you didn’t finish it or it just didn’t land, it’s totally okay to skip the review altogether.

No need to leave a 2-star rating out of guilt. Just move on.
That helps more than you know.

How You Can Support the Stories You Love

If you read a book by an indie author and it stayed with you…
If it made you feel something…
Even if it wasn’t perfect.

Leave a 5-star review.
It tells the author and the algorithm that this story matters.

Every rating and review makes a difference.
So, thank you for taking the time to leave yours.
